    Lyrics question ...

This may be a little premature since the LP just dropped on May 13, but here it goes anyway ...

Who is "ol' Dan" that Murry refers to in "Color of a Lonely Heart is Blue?" ... as in "scorpio's up, a leadin' ol' Dan to pasture" and later, "scorpio's up a leadin' ol' Dan to cancer" ???

Obviously, there's the star/constellation/astrology references with scorpio and cancer, but does cancer have a double-meaning?
Is it the name of a cow?
Is it Dan Fogelberg (who died of cancer last year)?
Is it the nickname of another constellation in the sky?
    Is it nobody in particular?

The 97's often put people they know in songs (Celeste, Robert's Dad, etc.) ... so I wonder if it's an inside reference. Like Murry lost a bet with his buddy Dan and promised to put him in a song -- that sort of thing.

I love this song and enjoy singing along, but it really bugs me when I don't know what it all means. I've always appreciated how the band puts their glossary of lyric inspiration on their website to answer inquiring minds like mine ... hope they do so for this one as well.

    Cheers!

    Re: Lyrics question ...

I've been trying to figure that out. Are you sure it's "ol' dan"? Hitbyatrain doesn't have the lyrics up yet. Well, they don't even have the lyrics from Drag It Up yet either so I won't hold my breath.

    Best song on BIOG...IMHO

    Re: Lyrics question ...

The lyrics are printed in the booklet that came with the jacket. It's "ol' Dan" and it's capitalized, while all other proper nouns (scorpio, cancer, etc.) and all the other lyrics are lower case.

I agree though -- best song on the album.

EASILY the best song.  I have no idea who Ol' Dan might be though.

I like the Dan Fogelberg theory.

I'd also like to have a band called "The Dan Fogelberg Theory".

I believe I read that Murry lost his father fairly recently - anyone know what Murry's father's name was?  Maybe Dan???

Are the lyrics available elsewhere for us iTuners?

OK, Murry's father was Donald Hammond, so there goes that theory...

Anybody got any further info? Theories? Guesses? Murry's e-mail?

A friend of mine sent Murry a couple of questions about his bass at oldnumber97@hotmail.com a few years ago, and got a really cool reply.  No idea if that address is still in use, but it might be worth a shot.

    Re: Lyrics question ...

O.K. This is pretty obscure but I am convinced I'm right about this.   There is an old Sons of the Pioneers song called "Cool Water".   The song is about a cowboy and his horse, "Ol' Dan", riding all night, under the stars,  in search of water and green pasture.   This totally makes sense in the context of the song and even with the mood of the song.

     What do you think?

    Re:New lyrics question

Does anyone know of a song on BIOG that has the name "Peter" in it? I know St. Peter is mentioned in "Por Favor," but I thought I also heard a track from BIOG on my local public radio station that included a reference to Peter/St.Peter.

    Can anyone clarify this?

    Thanks

    Re: Re:New lyrics question

Well, there's the "Reaper left at 7:30" from No Baby I, which sort of *sounds* like Peter.  Other than that, I don't think so.

Here's to the Halcyon has a Gabriel reference, but nothing about St. Peter.
