How did you become a fan?

The very first Old 97's song I heard was Weightless, from the movie Joy Ride. I always liked this song but I never knew who sang it. The next songs I heard were Salome and Barrier Reef. My friends used to play these songs all the time and so one day I decided to google Barrier Reef to see who sang it. (this was in 06) Found out it was Old 97's then looked them up on myspace. I listened to Jagged and loved it so much I added it to my myspace. Then I listened to Valentine pretty much decided they were the greatest band ever. lol. So I've been a huge fan since then. I even had my friends play it and Jagged at my grad party. So how did you hear about them?

For me, it was a lucky accident.  We had tix to see Matchbox 20 with Train in Toronto, around 2002 or so.  I found out that the 97's were opening literally about 2 days before the show, and like so many people, had never heard of them.  Well, I ended up liking them enough to pick up Satellite Rides, and have just added CD's ever since, and become more and more of a fan.  I've only seen the 97's live once since then, but have seen Rhett a couple of times solo.  They don't come to Toronto nearly as often as they should!

Cool. I've seen them live twice. First time was at the Carter A. Memorial concert at the Granada and the second time was the a couple of weeks ago at Good Records. I was supposed to see Rhett and Murry at the Granada in November, and I had tickets, but all my friends cancelled that day so I had no one to go with. :(

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...no, it really was a long time ago, back in the early '90's, I was helping out with a small fanzine doing the occasional show review/CD review.  One of the perks was that we got a lot of promo stuff from the record labels (and got into a lot of shows free, too!), and one day a demo for "Too Far to Care" arrived.  Listened to it and fell IN LOVE.  The band came to town shortly thereafter and I've never missed a show in my home town since.  Back then, they were all really young and single and now they're all married with children, but they still rock.  If they keep playing, I'll keep going, even if I'm old and need a scooter to get around.
    Still a firefly.

Re: How did you become a fan?

Actually, the Old 97's are responsible for our band here in Atlanta getting together. My friend Lauren went on a trip to Nashville, TN with my fiance and I, and on the ride up she asked us if we knew the Old 97's. At the time, the only song I knew by them was "nineteen." By the time the trip to Nashville was over, I was obsessed with the guitar work in "Doreen." That song actually became our rock out song on the 3 hr drive up from Atlanta to Nashville, and we were listening to "Hit By a Train: Best of..." on the ride home when we decided to finally get serious about starting a band.

That was about a year ago, we're now playing shows all over Atlanta with a few regional shows on the books, and we've even been written up in Twang Nation. We're called Missy Gossip and the Secret Keepers, and one day we hope to meet the guys from the Old 97's to let them know that they inspired us to get up and do what we wanted to do. Can't wait to see them in Atlanta.

...I still listen to Doreen and think about that car ride.

I used to be a member of the Columbia House CD club and they were having a buy one, get two free offer.  The CH newsletter had a positive write-up of Fight Songs so I figured I would check it out.  I got the CD and liked it so much that I immediately went out and got Too Far To Care, Wreck Your Life, and Early Tracks.  Some time later, I finally found Hitchhike To Rhome.  Been buying their CDs and DVDs ever since.

Holy cow, you guys sound great. I just came here on the tail end of a deadend E-Music download binge and after Googling yer band name, that's the best stuff I've heard all day. I wish ya the best.

(I think I posted my 97's story in another thread.. will find and paste later)

Re: How did you become a fan?

This girl I knew from the Counting Crows message board told me she heard a song that reminded her of me. She sent it to me. It was "Four Leaf Clover". I laughed because the first couple of lines were me to a T. At one point, this girl and I really just didn't like each other, but we had slowly became friendlier. After a while, she had given me a few of the albums, and I was totally into the band. Then she flew from Jersey to Oklahoma and our first "date" was driving to see the band in Nacgodoches, TX. That was Labor Day, '05. I've seen the band one other time since then, last year in New Braunfels. During "Question" I asked her to marry me. She didn't actually hear me because it was too loud. After the show, I asked if she'd heard me and she said no. I laughed because it would've been perfect. I asked her again at the hotel and she said yes.
I hope you crash your momma's car.

Re: How did you become a fan?

My friend Chip burned a copy of Satellite Rides for me. It had been sitting on the seat of my truck for weeks, when I found myself making a late-night trip to the store to purchase formula for my baby son.

I popped-in the disc and was mezmerized.  Like everyone else, I ran out to get the back catalog in the weeks that followed.

Re: How did you become a fan?

My mom got me a copy of the sound track for the movie "Hope Floats" back in 97'. I told her thanks, and as soon as she left I went down to CD World on Greenville Ave. and traded it in for "Too far to Care" because I liked the name of the band and I thought the cover was cool.  When I got home and put it in the disc cahnger, my life was changed forever.  The next week I went out and bought all their previous CDs.  Then I saw them live at Trees.  Where I discovered my other favorite band that opened for them.....The Deathray Davies.  Thanks mom!!!

Re: How did you become a fan?

It's all SERIALLADYKILLER's fault, hahahaha, jj, no but for real, I was new to the message board at CountingCrows.com, and one of my intents going to the board was to see if I could find some other music that would hook me as much as CC did, and guess what I found exactly what I was looking for.  It took a couple of months of searching and observing the posts,  but I finally took SLK's advice (he didn't know it at the time) and downloaded Blame It On Gravity, and was absolutely floored by how flippin good this band was.  So like the rest of you I kep emailing SLK to get my fix on which cd I should download next, and about within a month I have all of their stuff and I am going to go see them play at the 930 Club on Tuesday and I couldn't be more excited or happy...........so thank you once again SLK, you are the coolest man!
