Have you ever noticed how many great covers of Old 97’s songs there are on YouTube? We love to see a good cover video, so we want to share them with you guys and pick the very best ones!

Here’s how it works — just find your favorite Old 97’s cover on YouTube and comment on this post with a link to it. Every link posted will be a “nomination.” We’ll pick finalists and share them in a playlist so everyone can vote on their favorite, and feature a finalist a day on Facebook during the voting period.

And yes, you can nominate yourself. And yes, you can record a video just for the contest. Any original Old 97’s song, any instrumentation.

The final winner will get a special prize package, and SO WILL THE NOMINATOR. Whoa.

So start poking around YouTube and see what you can find, or get busy making your own video.

Deadline for nominations is Friday 3/13.

    • If for some reason you deem it a rules violation for Rhett to be the guitar accompaniment on the cover song, then consider the original video of Norah singing, strumming, and generally rocking “The New Kid” with her School of Rock band.

    Won’t Be Home

  6. Thought it would be fun to take a break from recording and record a cover. Picked one of y’alls.. all first takes which is evident by the lead. A real honest take.

Me. Curtain Calls. Rhett at his songwriting best.

  21. Salome’

  22. What about Rhett Miller covers? The audio from the cell phone microphone is really bad, but the song is good.

    Me. Curtain Calls.

  23. Curtain calls….one of the quintessential Old97s tunes. #hugefan

  24. Here is my alter ego Jeremy Nobody with his arrangement of Designs On You. Recorded with Audacity. Drums by Hydrogen. Squier Classic Vibe Telecaster played through Roland Cube 10GX amp. Vocals recorded with CAD U37 USB microphone. I’m terrible at bar chords and the vocals are overdriven on the chorus, but I hope you catch the vibe of what I was aiming at. Enjoy.

  25. Old 97’s Cover Contest – Jeremy Nobody – Designs On You:

Here’s our cover of “If My Heart Was A Car” with acoustic guitar and a whole lot of train shuffle.

  32. Let’s get Drunk (in a responsible way of course)

  33. Swaines cover of “Wasted”

  34. Here is our take on Buick City complex. We have enjoyed playing this as well as many other Old 97’s Tunes for a while now. So, we threw this together the other night for you all to check out. There are some great tunes in the comments above. Cheers

  35. My 13 year old daughter covered this song as a bday present to me.

I nominate this cover of Singular Girl:

  37. We couldn’t manage to get together this week to re-record a new cover so here’s an older live performance. Hope y’all like it!

  38. This is our cover of Victoria. It’s an older recording but we still rock it! Just last Saturday as a matter of fact 🙂

  39. This is John Sundrla from Naples, Florida. He has been a fan since the beginning. I am a friend of his and he is an amazing singer. He has turned me on to your music and made me copies of all your CD’s. This is my favorite song of yours and he sings this brilliantly. Please, please chose him as the winner. His wife is the head of our downtown community and he sings there occasionally. People shower him with tips and restaurant and bar owners ask him to play but he doesn’t think he is good enough and doesn’t have time. Crazy! So hard on himself. He was in a band in Beaufort, SC since he was a teenager and has been playing his guitar and singing all these years and is 49 now. He loves music and this is his passion in life and you can see it when he plays. For him to be excited about posting a video to you tube makes me happy because I have been trying to get him to do this for years. It took you guys to break the cycle. I do not want the package for the nominator, I would like it to go to one his old band member friends that have played your music live!!

I’ve been out of town and just saw yesterday that this contest was a thing! I’ve been playing Old 97’s songs to drunk people at campfires for years (badly) so this seemed like the right excuse to finally try it for YouTube. I recorded three songs but if we’re only allowed one submission(?), here’s my crappy cover of “Barrier Reef.”

  43. I nominate FOTD (Friend of the Devil)

  44. Sorry if this posts twice… my original one disappeared!

    Bel Air

  45. What a great excuse to record covers of my favorite band…with all my bands! 🙂

    Here’s Brown Haired Daughter:

  46. Here is one FOTD covers If my Heart was a Car and goes into Salome

  47. We have tried to post this so many times and it keeps disappearing, so I hope you re-consider this video even thought it is after the 13th. John Sundrla is a co-worker and friend and has been playing your music since you guys began. He has made me copies of all your music and I love it as well. He used to be in a band and then moved to Naples. He plays at our downtown events and is amazing.

  48. please forgive my tardiness
